Hey everyone! These conversations have been amazing. The cool part is that as we work to improve this program every month and year after year, the learnings brought up today will feed into making this program even better and more impactful! I want to thank you for joining us, being vulnerable, and asking tough questions. It’s time to let Sandra…[Read more]

Sandra’s story has me wondering — how many FBMs see themselves going into politics one day? (Answer with a smiley face if that’s you!)

Its funny because many of the female politicians I have interacted with never “saw themselves going into politics”… They all have said that someone had to repeatedly tell them that they should go into politics. So to answer your question: not currently, but who knows 😉
-
I know right!!! Hmm it seems as if we aren’t conditioned to see ourselves in managerial positions…
-
100% agree, unfortunately. Especially in politics where “image” is everything… I have hope that it will change one day
-
-
I think I am in the same position as you, Alana!
I am interested in working to change policies, but I am not sure about politics.

-
Definitely! 🙂

^^ @Robin and @Serena I think this touches on your questions
-
This makes sense! When you merged, were there any issues that arose in terms of meeting the interests/actions of both organizations?
-
In our case it really wasn’t a merger it was a take over. We transferred the operations and then dissolved our organization. But the YWCA had been running our organization under a management agreement for a couple of years so the transition, particularly for clients, was seamless. But the Y has kept in touch with many of us and updated us…[Read more]

I have a question for Mara! How do you keep the organization’s mission at the centre of your decision-making?
-
I would like to add on to the question. How were you able to maintain while also looking for other partnerships?
-
Good question because it was definitely at the heart of our decision. We were in talks with the YWCA for a long time before we made the decision. They actually provided the manager for our operations under a management agreement for a couple of years before we sold the operations to them. So it gave us a really good chance to ensure our vision…[Read more]

Welcome Mara! Mara will share a success story about a serving on the board for an organization working with homeless mothers and their young children to break the cycle of poverty. The board was to lose its facilities (it operated out of a school) and the board needed to decide how the organization could continue to thrive despite the loss. The…[Read more]

Welcome Sandra! Sandra will share the story of how a private shelter, destined to close forever, was saved through a unique partnership with the City of Toronto. Sandra served for 12 years as a City Councillor and, on return to being a private citizen, joined a board for a private shelter (meaning a shelter NOT run by the City). The shelter was…[Read more]

I also came across this incredible source for articles, research, and support for board work. It’s American, called BoardSource. Here’s the link to their diversity & inclusion page: https://boardsource.org/research-critical-issues/diversity-equity-inclusion/
